In 2008, a group of women, bound by their love of music and musical performance, came together to form a community choir that welcomes all women who desire music in their lives. We meet Sunday afternoons to practice our songs, to share our talents, and to enjoy each other’s company.
Impromptu performs once a year, each spring, a program of uplifting music that reflects who we are, strong women who live life fully. We have also “taken our show on the road” to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Portland, Oregon, Georgetown, Colorado, and Colorado’s Western Slope. We are proud to have also participated in fundraising concerts for SafeHouse Denver for women in need of support.
Our symbol of a treble clef surrounding a glass of wine reflects the joy we find in singing and gathering together. As important as music is to us, the social time we enjoy after rehearsals also brings us together as we share our daily lives, our hopes, our dreams, our joys and sorrows.
Impromptu is a unique musical community made of women from all walks of life: doctors, nurses, lawyers, professional musicians, travel agents, homemakers . . . If you love music, there is a place for you in Impromptu!
Leslie Britton, Musical Director
Leslie Britton has been the conductor for Impromptu since the ensemble began in 2008. She loves making music with Impromptu! The ensemble’s enthusiasm, love of choral music and compassion for one another inspires and energizes her each and every time they meet.
Leslie is the Founding Music Director of the Denver Children’s Choir and is responsible for developing and implementing the DCC’s unique mission that partners musical excellence with commitments to inclusiveness, multiculturalism, diversity, and outreach. Leslie directs the DCC’s most advanced ensembles and teaches a choral conducting class. She is the former Music Director and conductor for the nationally renowned Chicago Children’s Choir.
Leslie holds a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Northwestern University. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda music honorary society and the American Choral Director’s Association
Mary Christ, Assistant Director
Mary works with the Denver Children’s Choir as their office manager and wears various other hats as needed. In addition to singing with Impromptu, she sings in the Denver choral ensemble, Kantorei, and in the Sanctuary Choir at Wellshire Presbyterian Church. You might occasionally hear her sing a few of your favorite rock and roll songs with her friends in the Stella Jameson Band!
Impromptu is a source of joy for Mary. The dynamic women and their love and care for each other is amazing.
Mary holds a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pomona College in Claremont, California, with additional studies at the Aspen Music School and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
Eric Britton, Accompanist
Eric has enjoyed music and playing piano and trombone since the age of seven. Highlights have included summers spent in the asthma-inducing pine forests of northern Maine at the New England Music Camp, soloing in a national competition with his high school jazz ensemble at the Berklee College of Music, and deciding to take up accompanying in college when he realized his future wife was sitting in the alto section of the Dartmouth Chamber Singers....and he needed a way to meet her.
Eric loves the weekly invasion of his living room by the wonderful “Ladies of Impromptu”, and truly appreciates their passion and enthusiasm for making music. He never realized, however, that there was so much to catch up on and chat about during rehearsals.
Other passions include hand surgery, squash, and chasing a little white ball through the fields and fairways.
